Run 792- Justin The Holman Clavel
Hare: Justin
Hounds: Dormouse, M'bongo, Martini, Ken, Roadkill, Tom Tom, Tenzing, Gent Caller, Why Bother, Big Bird, Baby Spice, Phantom, Just Bull, WAM, Soc App
NB JB described this hash as "a thinking man's Hash" - should we name Justin Rodin ...... ?
15 eager hounds gathered in the car park behind the Inn, no sign of the hare and much discussion of no flour spotted anywhere en-route. Just as we were thinking it may be a no show, Justin appears at almost 7.30 on the dot, still red faced and out of breath from laying his premier hash.No time for pleasantries as we are led straight away round the front of the Inn for instructions of 2 & on, beware of slipping in mud & water. And then we are off, over the road and straight onto a footpath crossing a line of trees, and then through the woods by the side of Woodram Copse. After some fast paced running, we are quite spaced out & WAM/JB decide to stop for an impromptu regroup. Unfortunately Ken hasn’t realised this and continues ahead shouting on-on for some time until we finally get his attention, much to the amusement of the rest of us.We soon get underway again passing Madger’s Copse and heading towards Blagdon Hill, many of us noticing that we seem to be descending so far that we will need a helicopter to get back up to the pub. After a short while we realise that 1 of the hounds has vanished into thin air. It can only be Phantom earning her name. We are duly informed by our hare that she isn’t feeling to well and has taken a short cut back to base.We then head towards Priors Park Wood where Gent Caller earns his name by offering to run in front of his partner in crime, Baby Spice to clear the way for her. What about the rest of us PaulIn the woods it’s time for a regroup where Justin has treated us to some quality, branded sweets, nothing like the cheap Lidl crap that I will be providing! Then we are off again finally ascending the 2000ft (or thereabouts) that we had ran down earlier passing by Holly Bush Park and finally making our way for a well-earned ale back at the Inn.Inside, WAM is beating £15 out of each of us for the forthcoming meal and hash t-shirt. Anybody who hasn’t replied, beware! We would all like to thank Justin for a truly excellent, enjoyable first hash!
Run 791 - Floater Kilve
Hare: Floater
Hounds: Brush Off, WAM, Phantom, Just Bull, Sorc App, Gent Caller, Bat Eyes, Eric, Ken, Tenzing, Tom Tom, Dripped On, Dormouse, Ferret, Big Bird, Mike, DitW, M'bongo, Elaine
In the pub: Bankok

What a huge turnout! We had another new runner, Mike, 70 on the following day, AND we hadn’t lost our two newbies, Eric and Ken from last week. Dripped On made a guest appearance to show solidarity with Floater as they had both been named on the same day….. AHHHH, isn’t that luvly. We also had Elaine with us, first time since her pregnancy stopped her running, now he’s at senior school I expect we will see her more often!!We were told about all sorts of livestock in our way, told it was 2 and on and go run! Brush off volunteered to do the words as Justin was still just an ancient memory.Up a grassy track following the road, by the time we got to the first check at least 3 of us were feeling Dormouses age, even if he wasn’t. Across the road and left past the first lot of animals, horses, who didn’t even know we were there, and through a couple of fields, then Brush Off decided he really didn’t want to do the words and pulled up hurt (so he said – Hah) so that’s why you’ve got this load of cobblers to read! The trail continued on round East Quantoxhead through more fields, one had cows and their calves, another had a bull with his ladies and a third had young bullocks who apparently took a shine to Floater when he was laying the trail, and kept him close company, they weren’t so sure about us though.A few footpaths later we reached the sea, turned right and reached the regroup on a grassy bank above a large group of youngsters roaming around on the foreshore below. After stuffing ourselves we continued on, turning inland past the carpark and following the trail through – you guessed it – more fields until we came out onto Sea Lane which took us back to the car park.It was still a lovely evening so a large number of us sat outside until our goosebumps sent us inside. An enjoyable run Floater, many thanks.

Run 788 - Wam! The Chapel, Cotford st Luke
Hare: WAM!
Hounds: Gent Caller, Tenzing, Baby Spice, Chubby Checker, Dog Plucker, Phantom, Bigbird, Martini, Why Bother, Pink2Lips, DitW, Just Bull.
The 3 witches arrived on their wheely broomsticks just as the rain did, but that didn’t faze the dirty dozen, or so they became later on!
Two and on we were told and beware the horses.Off we ran through the park area, a group of onlookers giving us a clap as we passed them, coming out onto the access road and onto a stile where some misguided individual had pinned a note telling walkers that poison had been laid on the path, they had also attempted to obliterate it, but as their walk was only a short one we were soon back on flour. At this point in the hash Why Bother was leading us all, a great transformation from the previous week when on the last downhill stretch back to the cars his knees hurt so much I thought we were going to have to take it in turns to carry him!!The trail was flat and fast, taking us along field edges to Wick Farm then across to the steam railway line with a sneaky hard right turn to go over the Milverton road and towards Pontispool farm. This was where our hare had battled with the young horses, but they had been moved into another field by the time we got there. I’d had a feeling that we were going towards WAM’s house but she wasn’t letting on, though after some more running that’s where we all ended up. WAM had made a birthday cake for DitW, whose ????? birthday was the following day, so we all had a piece of cake and a drink and sang Happy Birthday to DitW.Grudgingly, we continued on the trail, still fast and flat, but the rain had stopped and a few fields later and almost before we knew it we had reached our starting point at the Chapel. It was a very enjoyable run, though I didn’t much enjoy the nettles, and with cake as well!Thank you WAM.

Run 785 - Brush Off
Hare: Brush off Hounds: Big Bird, Tom Tom, Gentleman Caller, Grass hopper, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Phantom, P2L, Tenzing, Ditw, Why Bother, Colin and Dog Plucker
The meeting point was The Monk, West Monkton, where we all gathered and took our instructions from our hare, two and on and the normal animals in fields etc. Then off we set up Noah’s Hill and passed the ponds and left up a footpath and across the field back towards West Monkton and onto Church Hill, we then tool a path taking us to the old Manor. This was part of the old Abbey of Glastonbury estate, one of the only estates west of the river Parrett, which is where the name West Monkton derived from. The path came back out onto a road, we turned left back down the road towards the village (well some of us did?). At the crossroads we went back up Church Hill and turned into the footpath running pass the old quarry. Quarrying stopped here over 100 years ago, the stones from this quarry is made of mud and sandstone and was used mainly in the West Monkton area to build walling and barns. This footpath brings us out above Gotton, where we turned left then right, passed Somerset yurts at Hill farm. Now the word yurt, most people believe that this means trellis tent that was used by the herdsmen from Asia. The Russian original yurt is a misapplication of the Turkic Yurt meaning territory or campsite. So if you are one of those people that like to stay in a yurt for week you are still just camping! We then found our way across more fields to the back of Hestercombe gardens and house, where the hare put in a sneaky loop around the back of the house thought the car park and up the zig zag path and back around again to the front of the house and our regroup looking over the formal gardens. Hestercombe has a unique combination of three centuries of garden design: Coplestone Warre Bampfylde's Georgian landscape garden, the Victorian terrace and shrubbery and the Edwardian garden design by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll. After the regroup we are taken back up though blue bell woods passed Gotton house and across the fields back to the pub.A very well executed run. Thank you Brush Off/Simon.

Run 781: Phantom Crowcombe on down The Carew Arms
Hare: PhantomHounds: Tom Tom, Big Bird, Wam!, JB. Gentleman Caller, Ferret, Dripped On, Floater, Soc App., Chubbie Checker, Dog Plucker,
late comers Martini and Ferret
In the pub: Bangkok
It was a dark and foggy night and the hare said to the hounds….. it’s two and on and there are ewes with lambs so please walk in their presence.
It certainly was foggy as we set off but (drum roll please) it wasn’t raining. Running in the fog is a bit surreal … it was sometimes difficult to tell if we were running up or down hill and we certainly had to call to avoid loosing any hashers. Our two new hashers (well Dog Plucker has been once before) where active members of the pack, checking here and there …. no one quite had the nerve to ask them how they got their names (perhaps next week).
The fog began to clear and the moon was bright. It was possible to see that we were in lovely countryside, running over streams and through woods. Phantom had set a ferret trap at the regroup … a sneaky little turn, which Ferret missed …. oh dear … more sweets for us. After the regroup there did seem to be a lot more up hill than down hill so we did get a bit spread out so JB called an impromptu …. once all gathered together again we made our way back to the start to find Bangkok in the pub having cycled her new bike down Crowcombe hill!! There was an enormous otter hound in the pub which was only 7 months old so will probably get even more enormous. They are apparently more endangered than white rhino ….. with only 2000 in the world, 300 of which are in the UK!
A lovely run Phantom.. thank you and I look forward to a re run in the summer so we can appreciate the views!

Run 779 Notley Arms, Monksilver Tom Tom
Run Number:- 779- 26th February 2014
Venue:- Notley Arms, Monksilver.
Hare:- TomTom.
Hounds:- Pink 2 lips, Big bird, Phantom, Dripped on, Bat eyes, Brush off, Gentleman caller, Grasshopper, Justin, Floater, JB.
Guest:- Vince
All met in the pub car park on a clear starry night, very nice to be back after a short break. After the hare did not assure us that there were not any hills we were off to the first check. Nobody seems particularly keen for the first few checks with lots of hanging about chatting but that abruptly came to an end when we left the road and ran up across a field, then onto a footpath and up again, then a track and up again and again and again. I didn't think we had hills this high, GPS said 950 feet
Finally we reached the top, great now it must all be down. Along a track to the road. JB headed off at a pace down the hill while the rest milled around deciding which way to go. After a while JB puffed back up the hill to be told by a smiling Grasshopper that it was that way after all. As she said all good for the calorie burn.
We were now in some more woods and through a very wet watery field past a luverly old house called Nettlecombe which I had not heard of before.
Regroup just down the road from Nettlecombe where the liquorice allsorts seemed to be in great demand. After which a fairly uneventful run back to the pub where we met up with Why Bother. By now the clouds had covered the stars but all in all a very pleasant evening run.
The Notley Arms had a new landlord who was very welcoming and lit the fire especially for us. The menu looked very good to.
Well done to Dripped On and Vince for travelling all the way from Glastonbury, must have been a 70 mile round trip.
Thanks to TomTom for a well laid HASH.
Run 778 The Cross Keys Just Bull
Venue: The Cross Keys
Hare: JB
Hounds: Big Bird, Pink2lips, WAM, DitW, Tom Tom, Martini, Roadkill, Phantom, Sorcerers Apprentice, Gentleman Caller, Baby Spice.
In the pub: Why Bother, Ferret, Bangkok.
The hare gave us the usual information before we started but with the welcome news of no hills. We set off and checked both roundabouts before setting off up the lane. Then right across the fields till we reached Langford Lane, across the lane and more fields before doubling back to the lane again. Good one JB! Again we followed the lane to the next junction and it was left towards Edgeborough Farm. We heard the alarming sound of a large vehicle coming along the lane behind us, at speed, so we all huddled in a gateway as a large tractor rushed past.
Once the danger was past we branched out across fields again to Pickney Lane, where we turned left and I thought I was on my way home. After the regroup when the rain started, it was back across country towards Langford. These were the usual boggy fields we have become used to this winter, including a path where we were up to our knees in water. Trainers to dry yet again! Finally we negotiated the main road traffic back to the pub.
Thanks JB.

Run # 771 : Down in the Woods Langford Budville Village Hall
Run Number: 771: 8th January 2014
Venue: Langford Budville Village Hall
Hare: Down in the Woods
Hounds: P2L, Why Bother. Liz, Big Bird, Brush Off, Grasshopper. Phantom, Wam!, JB. Gentleman Caller, Ferret, Justin (stranger .... maybe?! - could this be a new naming)
In the pub: Bangkok
We arrived at the new village Hall with, by the time we got there, quite a convoy of cars (signage for hall very very tiny). After admiring the new village hall and its ample car park there was a quick briefing from the hare about wet conditions and that mostly it would be “two and on” but sometimes it might be “nothing and on”.... well that should be interesting!
Off we set down a foot path and onto a road ... so far so good, plenty of flour but it wasn’t long before we were on a very slippery downhill track with lots of stones and green slime underfoot. Whilst Wam! was creeping down at snails pace, she nearly got taken out by Grasshopper who seems to have no regard for his own or others safety (you should hear his partner’s views on his badmington skills), powering down the hill, following hot on his tail JB wearing her new “mudclaw” shoes ....... mountain goat like!
On we went through various wooded parts and muddy tracks and on to the first re group .... just a practice, no sweeties. Not long after that, the real regroup with real sweeties. This was the moment the heavens opened and we all got wet! We didn’t hang around and carried on through the wood, up a steep very very muddy hill and back into the woods and then on in down the road.
A quick change an on in to the Martlett where Wam! got her bossy hat on and wouldn’t allow anyone to leave until they had committed to setting a run. Ferret amused one of the locals by talking about the Romanian woman who was going to massage his a**e tomorrow.... well I never!

Run 768: Roadkill Staple Cross Inn
Hare: Road KillHounds: P2L, Why Bother. TomTom, Big Bird, Tenzing. Wham!, JB. Gentleman Caller, Phantom, DitW.
On a beautiful clear night with lots of stars, 10 intrepid hounds await instruction from our hare Road Kill, all anticipating a bit of road!! Bit of chat about how we all managed to find the place but in the end not so remote as we all thought…..quick brief on deer park and some wildlife and gates and….
At the cross roads the hounds spread out North, East, South and West, and on on called East on the road, cross roads and check towards Hockworthy. Another check and left to the deer park and “close the gates”. Lots of deer around. On on towards Turnham and Stuckleys and check at Lea Barton. Left and check again on up and up towards Hockworthy again and guided around and through Court Hall Farm and Home Farm.
Re-group and a lessons in geography and star gazing (is that Taunton or Wellington and what are those red lights!).
On up and check right at Luckleigh Farm towards South Staple Farm and down towards Wilpit Farm with On Inn right marked twice so we didn’t get lost!
And to finish some road, wouldn’t be right otherwise!
Many thanks for a lovely run….

Run 767- Tom Tom Ash Common …. on down the Lethbridge Arms
Ash Common a rhyme by Gentleman Caller.
(he didn't say who was there!)
It was a cold dark night and the wind was still as we gathered in Ash Common looking up at the hills.
‘Up’ went the shout and into the night we did run, following the call of ‘on, on’ just for fun.
We followed the leaders into the woods, then up a muddy track with calls of “oh crap”,
On to a road with a check by a gate and into a field I followed my mates.
Across the fields we followed the path to a nice looking farm with a pond, we passed.
Down though more fields to a stile we go until after a while we came to a road.
Into a village called Halse we turned by a sign post with a check that had been put there by our host.
Through yet more fields we followed the flour around this small village until we passed the church tower.
Onto the regroup we all stopped with a whoop, to eat all the chocolates and sweets, oh what a treat.
The regroup did not last long before to calls of ‘on, on’ when we went over the bridge and up to the dark ridge, where the glow of the town could be seen in the night as we followed the flour with our touch lights.
Across the longest field I ever have been in, we all passed though a gate back towards the beginning.
Once on the road back to the common I heard the footsteps of Baby Spice coming, then just when she thought that she would pass me and Grasshopper had gone off in a flash, he didn’t want to be beaten by a woman you see, there was a noise of breaking glass, as my head torch came off, dispensing the batteries onto the grass.
Back at the cars we said our goodbyes, leaving the rest to their own demise.
Off they all went to the Lethbridge Arms; I hope that no one came to any harm.
What a great run we had that night, thank to the effort of Liz or should I say Tom Tom, “WELL DONE”.

Run 765: Brush Off The Harvest Moon, North Newton
Hare Brush OffHounds: Phantom, Bigbird, WAM, TomTom, Pink2Lips, Why Bother, Martini
A small select group of hashers met at the Harvest Moon... a strange place... but more of that later!
The hare told us to beware of the killer shetland ponies that nearly had his dog for dinner but other than that the usual two and on.
The first bit of excitement was when P2L spotted a distant christmas tree adorned with lights, but when we got closer it was an old high viz jacket hanging from a nail and reflecting our head torches....JB reminded us that it is nearly christmas after all. Wam was excited about the prospect of snow but Why Bother put the dampeners on that in his usual cheery way!
On we went across wet and muddy fields and along some equally wet and muddy lanes eventually stopping at the first re group. It was decided that we would wait for the next regroup for our sweeties as it was rather a cold drafty spot so we set off again across a particularly soggy field. We arrived in lane opposite Maunsel house which reminded Wam! of the recent national newspaper story of the owner who had spotted a Big Black Cat prowling around his estate. We were now on the lookout for dangerous cats and ponies. Luckily the cat didn’t show up and the ponies ignored us.
We had a lovely regroup by Maunsel Lock before trotting down the towpath (with several fishhooks that were ignored by all except P2L and JB), over a few fields and back in the way we went out.
Into the pub which was filled with men.... not a woman in sight except the barmaid. It felt a bit like we’d been dropped into the Deep South and I also think we may have alarmed them a bit by doing our usual strip and change in the car park, the smokers certainly got a eye full....that will teach them smoke.
Run 764: WAM! The Anchor Inn Hillfarrance
Hares: WAM Hounds: Big Bird, Pink2lips, Why Bother, DitW, Phantom, TomTom and Martini. Down in the Woods arrived on time-just… shaken but not too stirred this week after puking little daughter delayed her planned pre run checks. It was a lovely rainy autumn evening for a hash in rural Somerset. An intrepid pack set off after
WAM had given out dire warnings of rabbits on trail (should that read as rabbit holes on trail?), mud being a bit slippery (well isn’t it always?) and then added it was not too long and flour being maybe not too easy to see because of torrential downpour of rain during the afternoon (now….having done a few hashes … I know not too long can be a double bluff or open to interpretation), and (even in the dry and in daylight sometimes flour may not been seen very easily!).
Right out the pub car park, took a sneaky path through the churchyard across a little paddock, past the piano tuners, around Court Farm, head towards the railway and then up left to road then not too sure where but ended up heading towards Pontispool and Harnham Farm where the pack did a quick footpath loop around this property before heading back along side elephant grass plantations.
There was a sheltered regroup under a tree for a sweety stop ( WAM had inside knowledge that the extreme sweet consumers of Bridgwater 3H were not attending this week so her supply of sweets was rather reduced this week- to two packets but we still had some left Ferret and JB !)
It rained lots and lots, but we found the flour, no-one got lost, no-one slipped over in the mud or down a rabbit hole. To avoid the extremely muddy field the hare and the writer of this accurate account (local knowledge pays dividends here) took a little short cut at the end to arrive back for a well earned spell in the dry in the pub that has won the 2013 Somerset Best Pub Sunday Lunch Award (a trophy on the bar told us). At £9.95 I think but you need to book in advance as so busy now. Teenage off spring do the washing up/veg prep and ‘waiting’ here so they are in the know.
Thanks WAM for your considerable efforts in extreme weather conditions to lay a hash for us all.
Run 763: Baby Spice New Inn Halse Halloween Hash
Hare: Baby Spice
Hounds: Bigbird, Tom Tom, Pink2Lips, Phantom, JB, Bat Eyes, Gent Caller, Brush Off, WAM!, Why Bother, Baby Spice’s friend JanetIn the Pub: Dormouse and Mrs Dormouse
Unfortunately Wam! and JB were late again but at least suitable dressed in Halloween costume .... well enough to terrify a local coming out of her door (perhaps we always look that scary) but quickly caught up with the pack who were milling about looking for the trail just up the road. Unfortunately the leaders shot off and ended up on the last part of the trail and had to be called back by Baby Spice and put on the right track again.
Off we set over wet fields and muddy roads.... over styles and streams and back to where we went wrong for a re group. Baby spice at made a delicious orange halloween cake (Delia’s recipe ..... boiled oranges etc etc ask BS for the details) and some spooky chewy eyeballs courtesy of Ferret and Bankok.
Off we set again, spreading out over a large field looking for the trail which took us across to the corner, down onto the road and back to the pub.
Gent Caller first prize for best costume .... black marks for Bigbird, Tom Tom P2L, WB, B Off and Janet for NOT dressing up!
